A people who plan for their future and invest in their nation???s children???s future careers can help alleviate problems related to employment and other aspects of life.

Vice President of the Barbados Association of Guidance Counsellors (BAGC) and guidance counsellor of the Daryll Jordan Secondary, Saul Leacock, alluded to this recently as he spoke at the launch of BAGC???s 11th National Careers Showcase, at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Cave Hill Campus.

Providing the rationale for the showcase, Mr. Leacock said the guidance counsellors??? role was to inspire as well as offer hope.

He added that when people were gainfully and meaningfully employed, they felt better about themselves, especially when working in the career of their choice and enjoyment.

???They are more productive; they feel better about themselves; they are happier and they make a meaningful positive contribution even to society,??? he observed, while adding that being governed by proper Christian, moral principles and values also helped to decrease violence and crime in any country.

Students were told that since one third of their lives would be spent in work, it was important to crystallise from early what they planned to do in the future.

They heard too that the Careers Showcase, which runs until tomorrow, January 14, was designed to do just that ??????to help third years in their correct subject choices; to facilitate the career of their choice; and to help in the development of that mindset to put them in an area where they feel comfortable, where they are happy; where they enjoy doing what they like best ??? being meaningfully and productively engaged.???

This year, BAGC has partnered with the UWI to host the showcase at the Cave Hill Campus. Its Deputy Principal, Professor Clive Landis, in his remarks said, ???We are sure the exposure gained at the National Careers Showcase and the tour of the university will help students to decide on what careers to pursue and also how to achieve them.???

Many of the careers, he added, would link with the university programmes available to the students, and would have a Caribbean Vocational Qualification component.

BAGC???s 11th National Careers Showcase is also benefitting from generous donations from the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development; the Caribbean Development Bank; the Barbados Public Workers??? Cooperative Credit Union; and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic.
