Primary school education in Barbados stands to benefit tremendously from the participation of 25 teachers in a certificate programme in Early Childhood Education.

It was facilitated by Wheelock College, Boston, over the past year.

The teachers will graduate this weekend from the programme that was designed to respond to a critical gap in specialised teacher training within the public school system.

The ceremony takes place at the Hotel PomMarine, Hastings, Christ Church, on Sunday, May 25, at 5:00 p.m.

Minister of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ronald Jones, will deliver the opening address, while President of Wheelock College, Dr. Jackie Jenkins-Scott, will give the commencement address.

A collaborative effort on the part of Wheelock College, Erdiston Teachers??? Training College and the Barbados Community College, the training was coordinated by the Higher Education Development Unit (HEDU), a department of the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation.??It was funded predominantly by The Maria Holder Memorial Trust.

With this cohort of teachers having been drawn from primary schools across the island, the expectation is that Barbados will be able to build on a foundation in universal school competency in early childhood management and maximise the benefits from useful professional collaboration among the team.

Students travelled to Boston last summer to participate in a critical practical exposure component of the programme before undertaking most of the training here with facilitators.

Wheelock College is located in the Fenway, adjacent to the home of the world famous Boston Red Sox.??The College of having global perspective for students who want to change their world and improve the lives of children and families through their careers as leaders, advocates, and professionals.
