Education will remain a top priority in Barbados despite the impact of the global economic recession!

This assurance has come from Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Senator Maxine McClean, during a courtesy call paid on her today, by the newly appointed United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Country Representative, Kin-Sandi Lwin.

Minister McClean stressed: "We want to make sure that the children don’t suffer from the fall out caused by this recession," adding that while it had the potential to affect education and health, the Barbados Government would remain committed to those sectors.

The UNICEF Country Representative said that government’s commitment had "made it easier for us (UNICEF) as we usually agitate for education and health."?? Stating that her organisation would continue to offer technical support, Mrs. Lwin urged the Minister and the Barbadian government to "let her know what UNICEF could do better".

The Foreign Affairs Minister expressed her satisfaction with the international organisation and pointed to several UNICEF conventions that Barbados had signed.??

"For us, working with UNICEF is very critical so we could do the best for our children," Senator McClean said.??
