The members of Barbados’ workforce who have long wanted to get qualified as proof of their competence will soon have a more flexible way to achieve that goal.

The Government of Barbados through the European Union funded Human Resource Development Strategy, is strengthening the capacity of several training institutions in Barbados to administer Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR).

The consultancy to deliver the PLAR training to 20 persons from seven institutions has been awarded to Red River College, Canada and is being executed through the Technical and Vocational Education and Training Council (TVET) of Barbados on behalf of the Human Resource Development Strategy Unit of the Ministry of Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development.

The training is a blended format of online and face-to-face delivery. The online component took place July 11 to 22 and the face-to-face delivery takes place from July 25 to 29, 2016.

The institutions which are expected to participate in the training include the Barbados Community College, Barbados Institute of Management and Productivity, Barbados Vocational Training Board, Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, University of the West Indies, Barbados Accreditation Council and the TVET Council.

PLAR is a process by which individuals can gain credit towards qualifications from tertiary institutions, or the TVET Council Barbados, based on evidence from past education (formal and non-formal), work and life experience, or other achievements.

Administering PLAR will help to create a more efficient education and training system where uncertified persons with knowledge and skills who are already functioning in the workforce can be assessed and certified as competent.
