Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Santia Bradshaw. (FP)

Minister of Education, Technological and Vocational Training, Santia Bradshaw has condemned the behaviour displayed by a secondary school student involved in a verbal confrontation with a teacher.

Video of the incident, which took place in a classroom, has been circulated via social media.

Ms. Bradshaw, in a statement issued today, said she shared in the public outrage at the incident, and stressed it would not be tolerated.

“I wish to point out that while we’re only privy to a small part of what could be a longer video, I must say that the type of behaviour witnessed is not acceptable.

“It was neither funny nor demonstrative of who we are as a people, or who we must allow ourselves to be or even to become,” she affirmed.

“I absolutely condemn the tone and the attitude of the student and wish to reaffirm that while this Ministry will always seek to protect the rights of students at all times, so too do we denounce any implicit threats to the well-being of our teachers,” the Education Minister reiterated.

Ms. Bradshaw also commended the teacher’s firmness as he handled the situation, but noted she “would have preferred a better choice of language used in engaging with the student”.

The Education Minister gave the assurance that appropriate action would be taken.

“Clearly, there are behavioural and respect for authority issues exhibited in the video and I can assure you that the Ministry will ensure that there is appropriate professional intervention to assist all parties involved,” she stated.
