As part of the initiative called School Teacher Effectiveness Plans (STEPs), launched Monday, October 9, the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation will host a series of workshops for teachers from October 16 to 24.

The workshops to be conducted are: Numeracy, October 16 to 19; Special Needs and Inclusive Education, October 16 to 17; Literacy, October 18 to19; and Science, October 23 to 24. All sessions will be held at Erdiston Teachers’ Training College, Pine Hill, St. Michael, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

Through the use of workshops and other initiatives, such as parents’ fora, STEPs is expected to result in enhanced planning and the utilisation of student-centred teaching strategies to support more effective classroom instruction, engage students and bring about improved performances.

While the eight pilot schools will be implementing the STEPs already developed for their institutions, the Ministry will be commencing the process of expanding STEPs to the remaining nursery and primary schools across Barbados and hence, the series of workshops.

Facilitators of the capacity-building sessions will be the Consulting Team for the Teacher Effectiveness Component of the Education Sector Enhancement Project, from the University of New Brunswick comprising Dr. Sherry Rose, David DeCoste, Joann LeBlanc Hailey and Carla Kaloda.

The workshops are also part of the activities for Education Month 2017 being held under the theme: Firm Foundations= Quality Education.
