Charting A Course to New Horizons In Education is the theme chosen this year to mark Education Month in Barbados.

The Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation will begin the celebrations with a church service at Messiah House Wesleyan Holiness Church, Massiah Street, St. John, tomorrow, Wednesday, October 1, from 10:00 a.m.

Following the service there will be multi-media workshops for the Ministry, which will continue on October 2, 8 and 9.

The Month will be marked by the Caribbean Focal Point meeting for the Child Friendly Schools/Schools Positive Behaviour Management Programme on October 2 and 3 that will see Barbados and its regional counterparts assessing the achievements of this initiative at Blue Horizon Hotel, Worthing, Christ Church.

Friday, October 17, is Teachers??? Professional Day, and principals and teachers have been encouraged to plan activities for their own self-development.??The following day, Saturday, October 18, an evening of storytelling, dubbed Crick Crack, will be hosted on the lawns of Erdiston Teachers??? Training College for students of all ages. It starts at 4:30 p.m.

On Monday, October 20, principals and their staff will be given an opportunity to view several productions developed over the years by the Media Resource Department, when these are showcased at the Gordon Corbin Studio at Government Hill, St. Michael.

On Wednesday, October 22, the Ministry will host the annual Edu-Nation Discussion at Queen???s Park Steel Shed. The event, to be held under the theme: Links and Locks, targets fifth and sixth formers and tertiary level students and will run from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The annual After Work Lime, Karaoke and Line dancing session has been scheduled for Friday, October 24, in the quadrangle at the Ministry???s Headquarters, Elsie Payne Complex, Constitution Road, St. Michael, from 4:30 p.m. while the 5K Walk from Queen???s Park to Browne???s Beach will be on Saturday, October 25, from 7:30 a.m.

Another highlight of the Month will be on Monday, October 27, when Education Minister, Ronald Jones, officially opens the New Horizon Academy at the Erdiston Complex, Pine Hill, St. Michael. This will be followed by the launch of the text 50 Years of Universal Free Education in Barbados 1962-2012, on Tuesday, October 28.

Wednesday, October 29 is Poetry Day at all schools, while Thursday, October 30 is Health Day in the Ministry???s quadrangle, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.??This year, a School???s Panama Recognition Day has been added and will be held on Friday, October 31. It aims to encourage schools to develop activities in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the Panama Canal and the contribution made by Barbadians to its construction.

Education Month culminates officially on Saturday, November 1, with an island tour for Ministry officials, educators and their families, which begins at the Elsie Payne Complex.
