The Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development will commemorate the contribution of Barbadian teachers during the month of October, when it celebrates Education Month under the theme "Reading Opens the World".

Activities will begin with a church service, tomorrow, Thursday, October 1, at the Western Light Church of the Nazarene, Oxnards, St. James.?? Monday, October 5, is World Teacher’s Day and individual schools are encouraged to recognise the contribution of teachers and staff. ??On Saturday, October 10, there will be a hike through the Scotland District guided by Captain DeLisle Bascombe.??

The walk will begin at the old Indian Ground Primary School at 6:00 a.m., and will take a scenic route through Bawdens, Morgan Lewis, Green Pond and Shorey Village.?? It will end at the Conrad Hunte Pavillion.

Wednesday, October 14, has been designated as "Give a Book Day" and members of the public are encouraged to buy a book for someone, give a book to a school, or exchange books with friends or workmates.

Teachers’ Professional Day will be observed on Friday, October 16, while on Tuesday, October 20, Ministry officials will honour retired educators.?? The following day, Wednesday, October 21, and on Friday, October 23, the Ministry will have a Health Fair and Staff Exhibition respectively at its Constitution Road Headquarters, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day.

Tuesday, October 27, has been designated Teacher Appreciation Day by the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT), with the focus on encouraging school administrators to honour educators at their respective schools on that day.

The John Cumberbatch Memorial Lecture will be held on Wednesday, October 28, at the Almond Bay Conference Centre, Hastings, Christ Church.?? This event,?? organised by the BUT, will feature Vice President of Education International, Reg Weaver, who will speak on the topic "Transforming today’s classroom for tomorrow’s world".??

On Saturday, October 31, the BUT will also stage a Healthy Lifestyle Extravaganza at its Merry Hill, Welches, St Michael location, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.?? Members of the public will have the opportunity to have their blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol checked.?? HIV/AIDS Counselling and testing will also be available.

The final activity to celebrate the month will be a cricket match and lime for Ministry staff and family. ??It will be held on Saturday, October 31, at 4:00 p.m. at the Bridgefield Playing Field in St. Thomas.
