Six primary and two secondary schools will showcase their various skills and techniques, this Saturday, June 15, when the Barbados Cheerleading Federation hosts the Annual Cheerleading Championships at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex, Wildey, St. Michael.

The event, which begins at 4:00 p.m., will be addressed by Assistant Director of Sports at the National Sports Council, Mona Alleyne.

Defending champions, Belmont Primary, will come up against St. Catherine’s, St. Luke’s, Vauxhall, Christ Church Girls and Deacons.

There are, however, two new entries in the secondary school section. With the absence of last year’s winners, Graydon Sealy Secondary School, the competition will be between new comers Ellerslie and Harrison College.

Approximately 130 cheerleaders are slated to participate in the Third Championships, along with 30 hip-hop dancers in the dance section. One club, Twisterz All-Star Gym, will also participate in the competition. There will be explosive performances from dance groups Xtra Hype, Blu-tooth Breakers, Reactive Squad, Adrenalin Dance Squad and Element. Blu-tooth Breakers are the defending champions in the dance section.

The winning teams will represent Barbados at next year’s World Championships, which are usually held in April in Disney, Orlando, Florida.

Fans of the various schools, clubs and dance groups will also be treated to some Crop Over music from Mr. Dale, John King, Dutty Android and Marzville, and Summa.

President of the Barbados Cheerleading Federation, Vincent Carter, while encouraging parents, guardians and others to come out, said: "This year promises to be better than last year because the coaches were qualified by the international and certified coaches so one will see better techniques displayed this year."
