The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth, the Commission for Pan African Affairs and the Department of Archives will host this year’s Emancipation Lecture on Emancipation Day, Tuesday, August 1.

It takes place at the Barbados Archives Department, Black Rock, St. Michael, at 6:00 p.m. Historian, Trevor Marshall will discuss the topic: The Emergence of Black Businesses After 1900.  Persons attending the lecture are encouraged to wear Afrocentric attire.

This year’s lecture is in observance of Barbados’ commitment to the United Nations Decade of People of African Descent. It serves to raise the profile and importance of Emancipation Day to Barbados’ development and the national identity of its citizens.

Emancipation Day is celebrated throughout the Caribbean to observe the ending of chattel slavery and the dawn of freedom from servitude. For more information, interested persons may contact Sheron Johnson and Chereda Grannum at 621-2700; or Ingrid Thompson at 535-0050.
