Members of the public are encouraged to come out and celebrate the Season of Emancipation by joining fellow Barbadians on the annual Emancipation Day Walk, this Saturday, August 1.
Participants are asked to assemble at the Emancipation Statue, J.T.C. Ramsay Roundabout, Haggatt Hall, St. Michael, at 3:30 p.m.
The walk will leave the statue at 4:00 p.m. and proceed along Government Hill, Tweedside Road, around the James Tudor Roundabout to Roebuck Street.
It will continue along Country Road, Passage Road, Westbury Road, President Kennedy Drive, Holborn Circle, and end at the Emancipation Village at Bridgetown Market, on Spring Garden.
Walkers will be treated to commentary from historians Morris Greenidge and Trevor Marshall, who will speak on various historical and culturally relevant facts along the route. School children are especially encouraged to participate by wearing their African clothing, previously displayed during African Heritage Month.
Immediately following the walk, there will be a short programme which will include the annual Emancipation Day message from Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley; the laying of wreaths in memory of the National Heroes; and performances by spoken word artiste Adrian Green and Lion Soul the Band.
