Some 20 emergency health care professionals will on Monday, March 7, take part in an electrocardiogram (ECG) workshop at the Chronic Disease Research Centre in Jemmotts Lane.

The workshop, which will begin at 2:00 p.m., will inform participants of the need for accurate diagnostic skills and documentation of suspected or definite cases of acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a heart attack. Participants will include doctors, nurses and paramedics, however, an upcoming session will include professionals from the primary and private care facilities.?? Director of Medical Services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Dr. Delores Lewis, will deliver opening remarks.

Facilitators will include: Medical Consultant, Dr. Wayne Clarke, Medical Lead for the Emergency Cardiac Care programme of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Barbados and Emergency and Primary Care practitioner, Dr. Anne-Marie Cruickshank;

Fellow at the University of the West Indies and Lecturer in Clinical Pharmacology in the Faculty of Medical Sciences, Dr. Kenneth Connell; and Nurse Practitioner and Cardiovascular Registrar of the Barbados National Registry for Chronic Non-communicable Disease, Gina Pitts.

The electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) is a diagnostic tool that measures and records the electrical activity of the heart in exquisite detail. Interpretation of these details allows diagnosis of a wide range of heart conditions. These conditions can vary from minor to life threatening.????
