Plans for this year’s Agrofest are well under way and householders, schools, and farmers are being encouraged to sign up for the livestock, vegetable and kitchen garden competitions as soon as possible.

Coordinator, Thedore Fraser, pointed out that in keeping with the event’s theme "Achieving Healthy Lifestyles through Agriculture", greater emphasis would be placed on the kitchen garden component this year.

"We want householders and schools to capitalise on all the benefits of kitchen gardening. The physical exercise, the healthy produce and the joy and relaxation which come with starting a garden, speak directly to our theme. You can even enter the vegetable competition with produce from your own kitchen garden and win as well."

Mr. Fraser also revealed that there would be more categories for goat farmers taking part in the 2011 competition, and the time for the Dairy Goat Show has been moved.

"Goat farmers will have even more classes in which to enter their animals this year, and the Dairy Goat Show will now have its own slot on Sunday, February 27, at 1:00 p.m. That way, it will no longer have to share the spotlight with the Sheep Show which takes place on Saturday."

Agrofest 2011 will run from Friday, February 25, until Sunday, February 27, at Queen’s Park. The Dairy and Beef Show will come off on Saturday, February 26, at 10:00 a.m., while the Sheep Show will be held the same day at 2:00 p.m.

Entry forms for all competitions are available from the Agrofest Secretariat, Barbados Agricultural Society, The Grotto, Beckles Road, St. Michael, or by visiting the website http://www.basonevoice.org/, or contacting Saunjean Cutting at 436-6683.??askeete@barbados.gov.bb
