Celebrations to mark the importance of nature to our survival begin next month, when the Ministry of the environment presents a month filled with excursions, discussions, workshops and activities to commemorate Environment Month 2011: Living Sustainably…Towards a Green Economy.
Festivities began last Friday, May 27, with the official launch of at the Bellairs Research Institute, Holetown, St. James.?? The activities will include a series of Green Economy seminars, and school presentations and workshops with environment focused themes.
With World Environment Day observed on Sunday, June 5, businesses, schools and organisations are encouraged to "wear green" on Friday, June 3 and engage in environment-conscious events, such as tree planting and recycling.??
Another international date of merit will be observed during the second week of Environment Month, with World Oceans Day on Wednesday, June 8.?? It will involve a Life Guard Relay from Browne’s Beach to Rockley Beach, starting at 10:00 a.m.
On Saturday, June 11, a Green Reading will be held on the South Coast Boardwalk, Christ Church, from 3:30 p.m.?? This will feature the works of local poets and performers as they pay homage to the environment.?? There will be another reading the following weekend on Saturday, June 18, at the Speightstown Esplanade, St. Peter.
World Day to Combat Desertification, will be observed on Friday, June 17, and serves to bring into focus the effects of land degradation and drought on human life.
The final weekend during Environment Month will see activities heading to Welchman Hall Gully, St. Thomas, for the Grape Fruit & Molasses Foodies Trail on Saturday, June 25.?? It will combine nature walks and ecology with local gastronomy.??
There will also be a Propagation Workshop and plant sale on this day at the National Conservation Commission headquarters, Codrington, St. Michael, from 10:00 a.m.; and a Coastal Zone Management Unit coastal walk from Ragged Point, St. Philip to Consett Bay, St. John at 2:00 p.m. that afternoon.
Activities head to the south coast once more on Sunday, June 26, with the official opening of the South Coast Boardwalk, Christ Church, at 4:00 p.m.
