Celebrating and Preserving Our Heritage will be the theme when the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth launches activities to mark Heritage Month this weekend.

The activities begin with an Evensong Service at The Cathedral of St Michael and All Angels on Sunday, May 29, at 6:00 p.m. The service will celebrate the 5th anniversary of Barbados’ first UNESCO World Heritage Site designation, Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison.

The service will embody classical elements of the traditional service and elements of a folk mass.

The folk mass elements of the service will be delivered through a presentation from The Cavite Choral, and a dance group from the Way of Truth Dance Ministries. The Archbishop of the West Indies and Bishop of Barbados, Dr. John Holder, will deliver the sermon.

Additionally, on Saturday, June 4, the Barbados Museum and Historical Society will showcase the very best of Barbadian culture and heritage at its Crop Over Craft Works event. It takes place at the Barbados Museum, The Garrison, St. Michael, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The National Cultural Foundation (NCF) will also host a Bridgetown by Night Tour on Sunday, June 5, beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The tour, which will be conducted under the theme: Bridgetown by Night: On the Road to Independence, places particular emphasis on Barbados’ 50th anniversary of Independence.

As a result, it will introduce patrons to sites and personalities that were important to the City’s development and growth through re-enactments and installations.

On Saturday, June 18, the Ministry, in collaboration with the Errol Barrow Centre for Creative Imagination, will host a free Movie Night in Independence Square, The City, at 6:30 p.m. It will not only highlight the link between film and heritage but will also promote the work of local filmmakers.

The month-long celebrations will draw to a close on Saturday, June 25, with the erection of a marble plaque created to mark the anniversary of the Inscription of Historic Bridgetown and its Garrison, at the Garrison Savannah near to the Clock Tower.

Minister of Culture, Stephen Lashley; and the Chair of the Barbados World Heritage Committee, Mark Cummins, will unveil the plaque during an official ceremony which begins at 2:00 p.m. Following the ceremony, a procession will head towards Bridgetown to participate in the NCF’s City Fest, which begins at 4:00 p.m.
