Barbados will join with the rest of the world to observe International Day of Cooperatives (Coops Day) on July 6.

To mark the day, this island’s Cooperative Department will hold two major activities prior to, and on the day.

The theme for 2019 is Coops 4 decent work, in support of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 8, which promotes decent work and economic growth.

The celebrations will begin with a service on Sunday, June 30, at the St. George Parish Church, The Glebe, St. George. The service starts at 8:00 a.m., and will be addressed by Minister of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce, Dwight Sutherland.

On Saturday, July 6, the cooperative movement will mark the important day with an event called A Village-A-Fair at Church Village Green, Central Bank of Barbados, The City, from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Cooperatives of all types will showcase their various products and services, and there will also be plenty entertainment.

Minister of Small Business, Entrepreneurship and Commerce, Dwight Sutherland will address the start of the event, at 11:00 a.m.

The celebration of International Day of Cooperatives, as an annual affair worldwide, has been ongoing by the cooperative movement since 1923.

It is observed on the first Saturday in July by the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA). ICA is a non-governmental cooperative federation and a cooperative union.

It was founded in 1895 to unite, represent and serve cooperatives globally. Its headquarters is in Brussels, Belgium.
