As Barbados prepares to celebrate a Week of Excellence from Sunday, February 22 to Saturday, February 28, workers, employers and Government are being encouraged to review and improve their standards.

Executive Director of The Productivity Council, John Pilgrim, has issued the reminder that excellence means going above average, and he wants all to aim for such.

Mr. Pilgrim said: ???Promoting excellence means that you are seeking to encourage organisations to exceed the level of results they are accustomed to; you want to encourage persons to excel in their personal achievements and at the national level, we want to encourage all of the players to move beyond the realm of being achievers to being achievers par excellence.???

The Week of Excellence Programme, which was introduced in 2003, is designed to showcase this island???s best, while at the same time focusing on improving productivity.

This year???s theme is: Bridging The Gap: Today???s Leaders, Tomorrow???s Prospects, and starts with a service on Sunday, February 22, at the Kingdom Empowerment New Testament Church of God, Cottage Land, St. George, at 10:00 a.m.

On the following day, Monday, February 23, Prime Minister Freundel Stuart will deliver the feature address during the opening ceremony at the Grande Salle, Central Bank of Barbados, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Other speakers will include General Secretary of the Barbados Workers??? Union (BWU), Toni Moore.

There will also be a presentation by Lecturer at the University of the West Indies (UWI), Dr. Dwayne Devonish, on the Findings of an Empirical Study about Perceptions of Leadership Qualities/Traits and Factors Predicting Business Success among Youth in Barbados.

The focus will be on health and productivity on Tuesday, February 24, as the participants will examine Maintaining the Fight Against Infectious Diseases in the Workplace; The Economic Impact of Infectious Diseases in Today???s Workplace; The Physical and Mental Impacts of Chikungunya and Dengue Fever on the Workplace; and The Role of Nutrition in Combating Non-Communicable Diseases. This session will be held at BWU headquarters, Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael.

Discussions will move to the BWU Labour College at Mangrove, St. Philip, on Wednesday, February 25, and there will be presentations on Customer Service of Tomorrow; Benchmarking: Nurturing Best Practices as the Way Forward; Vector Control in the Workplace (Dengue Fever and Chikungunya): The Protocols; and Maintaining the Fight Against Infectious Diseases.

The focus on Thursday, February 26, will be on entrepreneurship, and the speakers will include Minister of Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley; and Lecturer in Management Studies at UWI, Dr. Paul Pounder.

Friday???s workshop has been designed specifically for secondary school children, and they will gather at The Productivity Council to hear Dr. Dwayne Devonish, Jeremy Stephen, and Training Officer at the Council, Karen Collins, speak on Potential, Preparation, Prospects: Yes I Can.

The week will culminate on Saturday, February 28, in National Heroes Square, with an initiative entitled: Taking Service Excellence to the Streets, which is aimed at sharing information on how to develop personal excellence with Barbadian workers. It will start at 9:00 a.m.
