Celebrations to mark this country’s 44th anniversary of independence are in high gear and will be marked by the staging of an inter-denominational service on Sunday, November 28, in Independence Square, Bridgetown.

It will have as its theme: "Upwards and Onwards with the Lord as Our Guide", and will get under way at 4:00 p.m. Participants will be drawn from primary, secondary and tertiary institutions, as well as well a number of youth organizations. ??Which is in ??keeping with International Year of the Youth.

They are: the Vauxhall Primary School, the Christ Church Foundation School, the St. Lucy Primary School, the Barbados Boys’ Scouts Association, the Barbados Community College, the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic, the National Disabilities Unit, Harrison College, the Barbados Amateur Swimming Association and the Barbados Chess Federation.

The service will be preceded by a procession of youth groups through Bridgetown. They will leave Jubilee Gardens at 2:15 p.m., travelling via Broad Street and the Charles Duncan O’Neale Bridge, to arrive at Independence Square by 3:00 p.m.

The welcome address will be given by Rector of St. David’s Anglican Church, Canon Noel Burke; Dean of the St. Michael’s Cathedral, the Very Rev. Dr. Frank Marshall will deliver the opening prayer; President of the Barbados Evangelical Association, Rev. Dr. Nigel Taylor will give the address; while the Right Rev. Monsignor Vincent Blackett of St.Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cathedral will give the benediction and blessing.

A number of prayers will be offered for the nation, for hope, the economy, young people, the family, and for peace.

The Royal Barbados Police Force band will also provide musical renditions.

Admission to the public will be on a first come, first served basis. Parking will be provided in the car park of the Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. in Lower Bay Street; the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s pasture, Martindales Road, St. Michael; and the compound of the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Constitution Road, St. Michael. A shuttle service will be provided by the Transport Board to and from these venues.

In the event of inclement weather, St. Mary’s Church, Jubilee Gardens, Bridgetown will be the alternate venue. This will be determined by Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, by 7:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 28.
