Barbadians will have the opportunity to hear from Cognitive Neurologist and Professor of Neurology at McGill University in Canada, Dr. Howard Chertkow, when he delivers a lecture to mark World Alzheimer???s Month at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St. Michael, on Thursday, September 19, beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The lecture is part of the Barbados Alzheimer???s Association???s week of activities, which runs from September 7 to 21. It will be in keeping with the global theme Dementia: A Journey of Caring.

Dr. Chertkow has been Director of the Jewish General Hospital/McGill University???s Memory Clinic for 20 years. His major areas of research interest include: early diagnosis of Alzheimer???s Disease and prediction of deterioration in individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment; the structure, organisation, and function of the Semantic Memory component of long term memory, and its deterioration in dementia and localisation of language and memory functions in the brain using functional imaging. He has published over 140 articles and chapters in these areas of research.

The professor, who is currently leading the initiative to establish a Canadian Consortium for Neuro -Degeneration and Aging, has several other responsibilities. He is the director of the Bloomfield Centre for Research in Ageing, Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research at McGill University. In 2008, Dr. Chertkow received the National Irma Parhad Award for contributions to excellence in Alzheimer???s disease research.

Activities for World Alzheimer???s Month will include a health fair on Saturday, September 14, in Independence Square, The City, from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.; a church service at the St. Philip Parish Church on Sunday, September 15, beginning at 9:15 a.m.; a seminar on Alzheimer???s being staged by the Barbados Alzheimer???s Association and the National Committee on Ageing at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Wednesday, September 18, starting at 8:30 a.m.; an Open House at the Association???s Black Rock, St. Michael, Office on Friday, September 20, from 10:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m. and; an Awareness Walk on World Alzheimer???s Day, Saturday, September 21, from Cheapside, The City, to Belmont Road, St. Michael, beginning at 6:00 a.m.
