Expo Shanghai is affording Barbados "a wonderful opportunity" to visit, to network, to share information, and to exchange ideas that are vital in developing a stronger, deeper relationship in business and tourism, between Barbados and China.??

This is according to Barbados’ first resident Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Sir Lloyd Erskine Sandiford. He expressed the view yesterday, while delivering remarks at a Barbados Networking reception at the Westin Hotel in Shanghai, China.

Sir Lloyd stated that the Expo was providing Barbados with a forum to promote itself as an excellent location for investment opportunities, to present some of the quality products it makes, and to exhibit the country as a tourism resort. "All of this is being done in a network of components permitting an easy flow of data, information and resources that constitute the Barbados-China cultural connection," he remarked.

The Ambassador pointed out that when doing business beyond the borders of their country, savvy, smart and knowledgeable investors seek locations and domiciles that are welcoming, friendly and pro-business, rather than domiciles that are inhospitable, unfriendly and challenging.

He opined that Barbados was indeed such a welcoming, friendly and pro-business location, which provided opportunities for investment in an environment that is safe and stable; that is lawful, and that allowed investors to avoid the burdens of double taxation.

Over the last two days, potential Chinese investors learnt more about Barbados as a pro-business location, through a series of workshops in Shanghai organised by Invest Barbados and the Barbados Industrial Development Corporation (BIDC).

Among the topics presented were "Benefits of Leveraging Barbados’ Tax Treaty Network by Ben Arrindell of Cidel Bank and Trust Barbados; Delivering ???Substance’ and Establishing a Company in Barbados by Managing Director, Tricor Caribbean Ltd, Connie Smith; Doing Business with Barbados – NIMO Experience, Jinsongson Zhang, CEO of NIMO Trading, Shen Zen; and Business Opportunities in Barbados, a workshop which was facilitated by the CEO of the BIDC, Basil Lavine.

Expo Shanghai is being held in Shanghai, China, from May 1 to October 31, 2010. It is a World Expo in the tradition of international fairs and expositions. The theme of the exposition is "Better City??- Better Life"??gapplewhaite@barbados.gov.bb
