Barbados is well poised to make road tennis a global sport.

This view was expressed recently by Minister of Sports, Stephen Lashley, as he spoke to the media during the launch of the Inter-Parish Road Tennis Competition.

Mr. Lashley disclosed that plans were under way for the hosting of a World Road Tennis Tournament here in November 2016, which would be preceded by a seminar and workshop for selected Caribbean territories.

Following the workshop, a small road tennis unit from Barbados was scheduled to tour the selected Caribbean territories and further instruct groups on the rudiments of the game.

While noting the potential for the indigenous game to be played at an international level, the Minister encouraged greater investment in and monetisation of the sport, as it held a business component which needed further exploration.

???We have a great opportunity to create a brand. This is also a great opportunity for some group of young entrepreneurs in Barbados to form a company and begin marketing and manufacturing what is required for the game to be played,??? he suggested.??Mr. Lashley also encouraged persons to support the ongoing Inter-Parish Road Tennis Competition, which will run until January 24, 2016.

The Caribbean territories currently being targeted for the exportation of road tennis through the workshop are Jamaica, Guyana, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua, Venezuela and Cuba.

To date, the Barbadian sport of road tennis has been exhibited as far as China. For the full schedule of the Inter-Parish Road Tennis Competition please click here.
