Several roads in Barbados will get a facelift to the tune of $6.5 million.

This disclosure came recently from Minister of Transport and Works, Michael Lashley, during the launch of a Road Package and tour of St. Lukes Avenue, one of the roads currently being rehabilitated.

Mr. Lashley told the media, in the presence of Prime Minister Freundel Stuart: ???We have allocated some of those funds to two other projects that were ongoing before. This project will involve private sector players, namely C.O. Williams, Infra Inc., Brathwaite Construction and Rayside.

???… We have a number of roads in that package ??? and we will be journeying from St. Michael, into St. Lucy, St. Philip, St. George, and Christ Church…. This is a move by the Ministry, through the Government, to generate some activity in the island and within two weeks or so you will see roads very busy in Barbados.???

The Minister apologised in advance for the inconvenience that the road repair might cause, saying that the construction firms would be working around the clock to complete the work.

He disclosed that Government was currently in talks with the Inter-American Development Bank for further road rehabilitation and construction. ???We have put designs in place, so hopefully, by 2015, $140 million will be available to the Government so that we can make further progress,??? he stated.

The work at Lukes Avenue is expected to be completed in three weeks and Prime Minister Stuart described it as being part of Government’s overall thrust to ensure the arteries in St. Michael were kept in a state of proper repair so residents could be kept in a certain state of comfort.

???For some time now, we have been having severe drainage problems here at Lukes Avenue. And, therefore, we have had to go back to the drawing board, and try to come to some more rational, scientific and engineering conclusions as to how best to deal with the challenges that have been posed… A unique kind of curb for this area has been put in to ensure issues of run off of water and drainage can be more easily managed,??? he explained.

He pointed out that there were several other roads with similar challenges and they too would be tackled.
