Barbados will once again join the global community to observe the United Nations’ International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on Monday, October 17.

To mark the occasion, the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, will stage an Empowerment Fair on Saturday, October 15, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., at Queen’s Park, Bridgetown.

Representatives of governmental, community, faith-based and non-governmental organisations will be on hand to share information on a range of topics, which aim to lead vulnerable persons towards empowerment. Patrons will learn about operating a small business, job-seeking tips, education and training, housing programmes, assistance for the elderly and Persons with Disabilities, and Welfare services.??

On Monday, October 17, to officially commemorate the Day, the Ministry will host a Panel Discussion at the L.V. Harcourt Lewis Auditorium, Keith Bourne Complex, Belmont Road, St. Michael, at 7:00 p.m. ?????????????????????? From Poverty to Sustainability: People at the Centre of Inclusive Development is the theme for this year, and will be the focus of the discussion.

Panellists will be Social Analyst in the Project Services Division at the Caribbean Development Bank, Elbert Ellis; Chief Welfare Officer, Pat Watts; Chief Executive Officer of Pinelands Creative Workshop, Rodney Grant; and Programme Manager for Poverty Reduction at the United Nations Development Fund, Marsha Caddle. Acting Director of Social Policy, Lee Rose, will be the moderator.
