With difficult economic times gripping the world and no sign of the situation easing up, Minister of Family, Dr. Esther Byer Suckoo, is urging all local families to “bind together and support each other”.

“If families pull together we can get through this, if everybody breaks for him or herself and goes out to seek fortunes on his or her own, more will be harmed. So, I want to continue to encourage families to unite, to work together and continue to set your priorities.

“Remember, at the end of the day, family, especially your children, have to be your priority. There is no dollar you can earn and no goal that you can pursue that will, in the end, be more important than that of your family and your children,” Dr. Byer Suckoo emphatically stated.

In a wide-ranging interview recently with the Barbados Government Information Service, she stressed that her Ministry was working on putting the necessary infrastructure in place to help build a better society so more families could thrive and help each other.

“We have talked about values and morals and there is no government agency that would even dare speak about morals and values in any meaningful way, but we believe that we cannot approach our work in the Ministry of Family without looking at values and morals. That is very important and we will dare to do that,” she underscored.

The Ministry of Family was created 13 months ago to fill a “void”. Its mission is to provide for the physical, social, emotional, economic and spiritual needs of every member of the family so all could live a wholesome and useful life.

Since the creation of the Ministry, Dr. Byer Suckoo said many Barbadians had called about “all kinds of issues”, including some parents being incarcerated, losing their jobs and becoming homeless. She admitted that some of the requirements which had to be addressed by the Ministry were not even anticipated. She however stressed though that “the Ministry of Family has to be far-reaching because there are many families with a lot of needs”.
