A dancer performs at one the many concerts being staged across the island by the Ministry of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth to promote the traditional Bajan Christmas spirit.??

Every effort is being made to ensure that the traditional Bajan Christmas remains alive and well in communities across Barbados.

This was underscored by Minister of Family, Culture, Sports and Youth, Stephen Lashley, while delivering remarks at the 2nd in the series of Christmas in the Community Programmes held at Gall Hill, St. John, last Saturday and organised by his ministry to spread Christmas cheer.

Mr. Lashley told those present that the staging of the event was a way of trying to reconnect persons to the traditional Bajan Christmas and thereby reignite the old community spirit.

The Family Minister reminisced that years ago, it was customary for individuals to go through the neighbourhood singing carols. "We want to rekindle that excitement," he declared, noting that his ministry will continue to stage the concerts every year during the Yuletide season, as part of its calendar of events.

The three-hour variety show featured performances by?? the choirs of the St. John Primary School and the St. John Women’s Auxiliary Group, Dancin’ Africa, DNA Drummers, the Barbados Defence Force Band, Haynesville Youth Club, St. Philip Primary School, Carol Brathwaite & Company, Hindsbury Dancers, Leroy Franklin and Sister Sister.

??Tomorrow, Tuesday, December 21, the concerts will move to the Speightstown Esplanade, St. Peter, where entertainers will include the Watson Boys Band, Chavone and Shmair Dottin, Youth Uprising Dancers, Bethel Dance Group, the Chalky Mount Wesleyan Dancers and Kimeisha Hinds.

A number of choirs are also slated to thrill the crowd, including those from St. Andrew Primary, Bethany Baptist Church, Roland Edwards Primary School, Alleyne Secondary School and Coleridge and Parry School. There will also be performances by the St. Lucy Secondary Steel Orchestra and poet, Debra Bovell.

?????????????????? The final event is slated for Thursday, December 23, in Jubilee Gardens. All concerts will get under way at 3:00 p.m.??clashley@barbados.gov.bb
