Barbadians going to Canada to participate in the Seasonal Farm Labour Programme will benefit from an orientation session that will equip them with skills to assist them in adjusting to the new climate, career and lifestyle.

Word of this has come from Senior Labour Officer, Valerie Quintyne, as she outlined the benefits participants could receive from attending the sessions to be hosted by the National Employment Bureau (NEB) tomorrow Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25, from 9:30 a.m.

The orientation will take place in the Conference Room, 2nd Floor, National Employment Bureau, Old NIS Building, Fairchild Street, Bridgetown.

The Senior Labour Officer said that the half-day sessions were part of her department’s sensitisation and education process for successful candidates of the Canadian Farm Labour Programme.??

Ms. Quintyne explained candidates would be required to participate in the orientation sessions, where they would learn about money management techniques, the rules and regulations of the Canadian Farm Labour Programme, conflict management, and cultural sensitisation.

Topics to be discussed tomorrow include Relationships/Personality Conflicts by Senior Clerk of the NEB, Pertonilla Garnes; Handling of Chemicals and Insecticides by Occupational Safety and Health Officer, Nia Salankey; HIV/AIDS Awareness by AIDS Coordinator, Norma Bynoe; and Job Performance by Labour Officer, Elcon Arthur. At 12:30 p.m. workers will benefit from a personal explanation of the Canadian Farm Labour Programme, entitled From the Farm Worker’s Perspective by former farm worker, Anthony Franklyn.

Ms. Quintyne lamented that, over the years, there was a vast reduction in numbers of Barbadians going to Canada under the Farm Labour Programme, citing that NEB had moved from sending approximately 1,000 persons per year to sending 160 persons in 2011.??

The Senior Labour Officer pointed to the current economic decline and Barbadian’s decreasing interest in agriculture as two of the main reasons for the fall-off.??
