The use of solar power and renewable energy is gaining a foothold in the local agricultural sector with some farmers making a heavy investment in such technology.??
This is according to Chief Executive Officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul, who also said that the rebate government has given with regard to the use of solar technology would go a long way in encouraging its use here.
"The use of solar technology is more prevalent than you think…people are investing in photovoltaic cells on their own. I think because of the incentives that government recently gave…that $5,000 rebate, is going to assist greatly. People are really moving forward in terms of the use of solar technology and the necessary investment," he added.
Mr. Paul was speaking yesterday during a presentation ceremony for winners of the 2011 Agrofest Primary Schools Poster Competition at First Citizens Investment Services at Warrens, St. Michael.
The theme for this year’s Agrofest is Renewable Energy: Powering Agriculture to Success and it will take place from Friday, February 24, to Sunday, February 26, at Queen’s Park, The City.
In keeping with the theme of the event, several exhibitors will have booths illustrating the use of solar powered technology and recycling.
In addition, the BAS will incorporate solar powered equipment into this year’s Agrofest, as a means of showing farmers the benefits of such technology.
It will include the use of solar technology in livestock housing, for the security monitoring systems and a solar powered generator will provide electricity for the show.
