Colourful renderings of ways to preserve the environment were submitted by students from across the island last month, and six of those works have been selected as the winners in the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Children Environmental Poster Competition.

The Ministry of Tourism received entries from 10 schools, with 28 posters in the Junior Division – ages 12 and under; and 19 in the Senior Division – ages 13 to 16.??

The pieces were judged on creativity, relevance to theme, content and quality of presentation by a panel, which included Valerie Hope of the Nation Publishing Company; Elon Lewis from the Barbados Community College; and Rodney Ifill and Janice Whittle, both from the National Cultural Foundation.??

First place in the Junior Division went to Daniel Lashley of Harrison College, with second and third places awarded to Kianna Best-Hill of Charles F. Broome Memorial Primary School and Chont?? Jordan of Westbury Primary School, respectively.?? Among the Seniors, Brenden Gonsalves of Queens College won first place, while Romario Ren??e of Lodge School earned second place and Aerin Prescod of Queen’s College, third.

Other schools which participated were St. Philip’s Primary School, Jones’ Private School, The Ursuline Convent, the School for Special Needs, and the Deighton Griffith School.

The six posters have been submitted to the FCCA in Florida where they will be judged along with entries from other Caribbean islands. Regional winners will be announced on Monday, February 14.????????

Winners at both national and regional levels of the competition will be awarded prizes from the Ministry of Tourism and the FCCA at a ceremony next month.????
