Global challenges and changes will be examined this Thursday, May 17, when feminists from the economic south gather in Barbados for a public forum.
Feminists in the Economic South and Key Global Processes: Debates and Controversies is the theme of the discussion, which will take place in the Medical Sciences Lecture Theatre of the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
Panellists will include Professor Gita Sen of the India Institute of Management and Adjunct Lecturer at Harvard University, who will examine South Feminist Challenges in Cairo+20, and 27-year-old Nicole Bidegain of Uruguay, who will reflect on the post-Millennium Development Goals framework. Feminist activist and scholar, Anita Nayar, will discuss issues of political ecology and sustainability, while Claire Slatter of Fiji’s National University will look at current calls for a fifth World Conference on Women.
This interactive discussion will be hosted by the Institute for Gender and Development Studies: Nita Barrow Unit and members of the public are invited to attend. During the session, members of Development Alternatives with Women for A New Era (DAWN) will discuss challenges for feminists in the developing world around a range of issues, including sexual and reproductive health rights, climate change and ecology and approaches to development.
DAWN is a Global South feminist organisation which has consultative status with the United Nations.
