Top language students from secondary and tertiary institutions will exhibit their skills in Spanish and French this Friday, November 19, when the Barbados Community College (BCC) hosts the finals of its Annual Foreign Language Competition Encuentro/Rencontre.

The competition will be held in the Liberal Arts Auditorium, Howells Cross Road, St. Michael.

Encuentro/Rencontre, the brainchild of BCC’s Spanish tutor, Joseph Inniss, comprises eight competitions of Spanish and French speak-offs spanning primary, secondary and tertiary institutions.

The event began as Encuentro – a Spanish speaking competition for A-Level, Associate Degree and first-year students of the University of the West Indies in 1992. However, with the increased interest and participation shown by students and teachers, it expanded into Encuentro/Rencontre.

Organised by the Language Department of the BCC, it is sponsored by Goddards Entreprises Ltd. The competition shows the commitment of the BCC to promoting foreign language learning and allows the college to contribute to the achievement of educational, socio-economic and cultural goals at national, regional and global levels.

For secondary and tertiary level institutions, the Spanish competition includes Declamaciones, En Vivo, A la vista, Encuentro. There are three competitions in French for students at secondary and tertiary – Eloquence, Clin d’oeil and Rencontre and concours d’eloquence.

The Spanish competition Encuentro Musical, is staged biennially for primary schools. The finals of that event were held last week and saw Gordon Walters Primary emerging as winners. St. Christopher’s placed second and St. Bartholomew was third, while Vauxhall Primary finished in fourth position.??jgill@barbados.gov.bb
