Thirteen primary schools are into the finals of the biennial Schools’ Choir Competition following the close of preliminaries held February 15, 16 and 17 at St. Michael School; the Alexandra School Hall and the Princess Margaret Secondary School, respectively.

The primary schools are St. Elizabeth’s; St. Matthew’s; Cuthbert Moore; South District; St. Philip; Vauxhall; Hilda Skeene; St. Bartholomew’s; Arthur Smith; Mount Tabor; St. Giles; Sharon and Grantley Prescod.

Coordinator of the event and peripatetic teacher (music) with the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, Anthony Sargeant, said the competition has thus far been of a high standard, with students demonstrating "great levels of voice control, tonal quality and accuracy".

Commending the teachers and personnel who performed the role of choir masters/conductors, he added: "They were the ones who worked diligently to get the students to this stage and as a result, we have seen six original songs and a choir singing a medley of old-time gospel, which you wouldn’t necessarily think children of that age would embrace."

The finals of the competition will take place on Sunday, March 6, at the Wildey Gymnasium, from 3:00 p.m. In addition to featuring the 13 primary schools, four secondary schools will also participate: they are Harrison College; Deighton Griffith; Lester Vaughan and Christ Church Foundation.

Guest artistes will include 2010 Junior Calypso Monarchs Myles Gittens and Aziza Clarke and the very dynamic St. Leonard’s Secondary School Boys’ Choir.

Tickets for the finals of the Schools Choir Competition are available at $10 and with a purchase of three, at the price of $25. In addition to being available at all schools that are in the finals, they can also be purchased at A&B Music Supplies (Sheraton and Wildey branches, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, ‘, NULL, NULL, 0); C.S.
