The findings of the Hydrochlorofluorocarbon (HCFC) survey and preliminary strategy for the HCFC phase out management plan for Barbados will be revealed on Wednesday, November 7, at the Savannah Beach Hotel, Hastings, Christ Church, beginning at 9:00 a.m.

This is the last of three stakeholder consultations held from May this year to address the issue of preparing Barbados for the phasing out of the refrigerant gases used in equipment such as air conditioning systems, freezers and refrigerators.

The consultation will look at the findings of the national HCFC survey, those of the international HCFC market study and the preliminary strategy to phase out HCFCs in Barbados.

The theme for the phase out campaign is: Use Ozone and Climate Friendly Technologies to Protect Our Atmosphere for Generations to Come: HCFC Phase Out 2013-2030 – Get Ready.

It is expected to define the schedule of national activities to be undertaken in preparation for the global phase out, and the transition towards the use of non-ozone depleting, climate friendly and energy efficient alternatives. The project is also expected to address the economic, social, legal and technological implications of the phase out for Barbados.

HCFC is a combination of hydrogen, chlorine, fluorine and carbons, and was used to replace Chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) gas, as it has a shorter life when exposed to the atmosphere, resulting in less potential damage to the ozone.
