The Barbados Fire Service (BFS) will launch a television series, in collaboration with the Barbados Government Information Service (BGIS), entitled The Firewall, tomorrow, Wednesday, August 5, on CBC TV8, at 8:30 p.m.

The programme will air once a month and feature various aspects of the operations of the BFS, and provide advice on how to access its services, as well as fire safety and fire prevention tips for homes and businesses.

Chief Fire Officer, Errol Maynard, said the main aim of the programme is to educate the public about fire safety and to build a community of resilient persons whose lifestyles resemble one of safety.

“While we were doing our discussions for our strategic plan the name The Firewall came up. We recognised that the name Firewall is nothing unique to the Barbados Fire Service or to fire fighting. It is used in engineering; it is used in computer science, and it is also used in fire-fighting.  We looked at it carefully and recognised that the Firewall is a barrier; it provides protection.

“So, if we get the people of Barbados thinking life safety, and fire safety constantly, and it becomes a way of life, then that in itself provides that barrier, that Firewall that we are talking about, so we decided that we would call the television show The Firewall,” Mr. Maynard said.

He pointed out that the television series would enhance what was already being done via radio through the BFS’ 311 Programme and the Safe Programme in schools. “Our aim is to get the message out there to each and every Barbadian,” the Fire Chief said.

Mr. Maynard said the programme was first conceptualised two years ago to allow the Fire Service to “inundate” people with fire safety and fire prevention information, but due to financial constraints, they were unable to do so before partnering with the BGIS.
