The Barbados Government’s first shipment of supplies to Haiti left the island yesterday (Wednesday, February 10), bound for Jamaica, the Caribbean’s staging point in the relief effort.
The shipment comprised one 40-foot container filled with medical supplies, and two 20-foot containers with a variety of other items.
This is according to Parliamentary Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office, Senator Irene Sandiford-Garner, who is also the coordinator of the National Collaborative Haiti Relief Effort.
Meanwhile, she noted that activity would be scaled down at the supermarket collection points, due to a decrease in donations over the past two weeks. However, the warehouses at Six Roads, St. Philip, and Barbarees Hill, St. Michael, will remain open.
The Parliamentary Secretary added that there was also a call by the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency, coordinator of the CARICOM relief initiative in Haiti, for building supplies and monetary donations to assist in maintaining that effort.
"Barbados is to be lauded for the extra-ordinary generosity displayed, not only at the local level, but through contributions to the regional mechanisms which have been mobilised to assist Haiti," Senator Sandiford-Garner said.??????
Monetary donations can continue to be made at the Barbados National Bank, account number, 01 801 513-2002 or First Caribbean International Bank, to account 1001-059-963.
