School children dressed in costumes representing different story book characters will form a major part of a Float Parade being staged by the Barbados Association of Reading (BAR) tomorrow Saturday, September 6.

According to BAR President and Deputy Principal of Erdiston Teachers??? Training College, Dr. Patricia Saul, the Float Parade is an opportunity for BAR to sensitise the public about International Literacy Day, to be celebrated on Monday, September 8 and ???to encourage them to do something to celebrate it???.

The Parade will feature five trucks, all beautifully decorated to showcase different types of literature.??Participants drawn from community groups, schools, Erdiston Teachers??? Training College, and Reading Clubs across the island will join members of the association as they walk along the route from the Nation car park, Fontabelle to Queen’s Park.

Trucks will leave the Nation at 9:30 a.m. Along the route, the float will stop at Cave Shepherd where members will distribute literature and deliver a short presentation to members of the public.??At Queen???s Park, the Garrison Secondary School???s Octagon Debating Club will release balloons in honour of the Nigerian girls who were kidnapped from their boarding school by Boko Haram.

International Literacy Day is an opportunity to draw the public’s attention to literacy and the important role that it plays in personal and national development.?????We encourage schools, community groups, churches, and businesses – both private and public – to mount activities to draw the attention of all Barbadians to the importance of this day,??? said Dr. Saul.
