Nutrition Week will be celebrated from Monday, March 29 to April 4, with special emphasis on disseminating information contained in the Food-based Dietary Guidelines.??

During the week, a team of nutritionists from the National Nutrition Centre will visit polyclinics and educate the public on the use of the seven guidelines that were launched last November.

On Monday, March 29, the team will visit Winston Scott Polyclinic; on Tuesday, March 30, they will target the Glebe Polyclinic in St. George and Six Roads Polyclinic in St. Philip and on Wednesday, March 31, the Black Rock and Randal Philips Polyclinics will be visited.

The guidelines will be highlighted at the Edgar Cochrane and Maurice Byer Polyclinics on Thursday, April 1.

All educational sessions will run from 9:30 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.

A key highlight of the week will come on Saturday, April 3, with a campaign at Fitts Village Esplanade from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.?? It will be officially opened by Minister of Health, Donville Inniss.

The week will culminate with a church service at St. Peter’s Parish Church, at 7:00 p.m. The Minister will also be in attendance.

The Food-based Dietary Guidelines has been designed by the National Nutrition Centre to help individuals make positive changes in their eating habits and increase their activity level to promote and maintain healthy lifestyles – this, in an effort to prevent chronic non-communicable diseases, including obesity.

The booklet recognises that developing an informed consumer is an essential first step towards changing lifestyles. While it has been developed to impart nutrition knowledge and promote an understanding of what constitutes a balanced diet, it also gives information on the richest food sources of nutrients and provides realistic assessments of the quantities of foods needed to achieve healthy living.
