Final arrangements for the free Cuban eye care programme Operación Milagro and the accreditation of degrees obtained by Barbadians studying in Cuba are two of the issues to be discussed at the Fourth Meeting of the Barbados-Cuba Joint Commission, scheduled for December 7th and 8th, 2006 at the Accra Beach Hotel.

Since 1999, Barbados and Cuba have held regular bilateral consultations to determine and coordinate mutually beneficial projects aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries. In addition to those mentioned above, cooperation in other areas such as science and technology, culture, sports and trade will be discussed.

This year, the meeting will be co-chaired by Ms. Teresa Marshall, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade. A high-level Cuban delegation is expected and recently appointed Cuban Ambassador HE Mr. Pedro García Roque will play an integral role in the two-day proceedings.

The last day of the meeting – December 8th – coincides with the 4th anniversary of CARICOM-Cuba Day and will be marked by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Cubana Memorial in Paynes Bay, St. James and a reception to be hosted in honour of the Cuban delegation.

Diplomatic ties between Barbados and Cuba were formally established in 1972 and the countries enjoy a robust, cooperative relationship.
