As part of the events to mark Black History Month, the Garrison Secondary School will host a programme of activities tomorrow, February 18, at the institution on Paddock Road, St. Michael, at 9:30 a.m.

The school, which is involved in the Transatlantic Slave Trade Project of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), will focus on aspects of the slave trade, particularly "The Middle Passage".

According to Social Studies/History teacher, Sonia Ashby-King, the programme will have the full participation of students who will sing, dance and perform through drama.?? "We’re trying to educate students on what occurred throughout the slave trade and we will also be depicting different parts of Africa and aspects of life in Africa," Mrs. Ashby-King explained, adding that she will make a presentation on the Middle Passage.

The programme will also comprise a display of flags from the African continent, chorale speaking, the singing of the national anthem of Africa and Negro spirituals, as well as Bob Marley’s Redemption Song, to be performed by ???Young Pleasures’.

Students will also engage in an African hairstyling competition and modeling.?? ????The feature address will be delivered by performance poet/cultural activist and United Nations Development Programme spokesperson for Peace and Poverty Eradication for Barbados and the OECS, Adisa A.J.A. Andwele.??
