Members of the St. Michael Central Constituency, who went beyond the call of duty to ensure that the needs of their neighbours, friends and family were met, were celebrated last weekend at a special awards ceremony and dinner.

The Gems of the Community awards ceremony, held at the Radisson Aquatica Resort, sought to recognise the contributions of residents to the development of their constituency, as well as to the nation.

In his address, Minister of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Steve Blackett, described the awardees as having given “yeoman service” to their community.

“These individuals, through their efforts, have shone among their counterparts and are exemplary. They possess the true ‘Bajan’ spirit of camaraderie, sincerity and hospitality…,” he stated.

Mr. Blackett added that the Ministry sought to recognise persons for their service to the community when it was driven by “intrinsic determination” and not extrinsic rewards.

“This attitude of voluntarism is one which is historic and inherent in Barbadian culture, where neighbours ensure that the needs of the other are met; where an entire village raises a child and respect is a core value.  This act of being ‘one’s keeper’ is personified in every village in the St. Michael Central constituency and is indigenous to this community,” he expressed.

The Minister urged the community “gems” to continue to “achieve and shine”, as they strived to build and empower their community and foster a sense of spirit and unity.
