Another group of civil servants will undergo training in gender analysis and awareness next week when the Bureau of Gender Affairs hosts a three-day workshop.

It will be held from December 7 to 9 at the Pavilion, University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.?? Some of the areas the participants will focus on include Social Construction of Gender, Gender Roles and Relations, Gender and Sustainable Development, Gender Analysis and Gender Planning.

At the end of the training, the participants are expected to, among other things, identify barriers and obstacles men and women face as they attempt to perform their multiple roles; understand how policy is formulated and the extent to which the processes determine the achievement of national development goals; and develop strategies that empower policymakers to incorporate gender in national policies.

The Gender Analysis and Gender Awareness training is part of an overall strategy to mainstream gender in all government programmes, policies and activities.??

An official of the Bureau explained that the workshops "increase the capacity of officers to operate in this new global environment, since most international agencies are demanding that governments pay special attention to gender equity and equality.

"The World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, the agencies of the United Nations and the more recent Millennium Development Goals, have all recognised that there can be no real and sustainable development without gender equality," the official stated.??saustin@barbados.gov.bb
