Speech Day At Combermere Tomorrow

The Combermere School at Waterford, St. Michael will hold its annual Speech Day and Prize-Giving Ceremony, tomorrow, Wednesday, April 2, at 1:30 pm. in the school hall.

Old scholar and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Abelian Consulting Services Inc., Ryan Straughn will deliver the feature address.??Principal, Vere Parris, will also give remarks.

CBTF Call For Proposals

Employers and trainers who wish to access money for training through the Competency Based Training Fund are invited to respond to the first call for proposals, which begins on Friday, April 11.

The Fund, an initiative of the Government of Barbados and the Inter-American Development Bank, was designed to create a Barbadian workforce which is equipped with the skills and competencies that foster competitiveness and efficiency.

In order to be eligible, employers must apply in partnership with a training provider and the training to be undertaken must be based on standards which are: already included in the National Vocational Qualification or Caribbean Vocational Qualification registered in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Council; or from a recognised international certification awarding entity; or yet to be developed and validated under the proposal. Applicants are also advised that training must lead to an occupational competency-based certification by a recognised awarding body.

Employers must be locally registered or incorporated in Barbados for at least two years and must provide evidence to support this fact. Small businesses and entrepreneurs may join with other businesses or trade associations and submit a joint proposal in partnership with a training provider.

Training providers may be public, private, local, regional or international, but must be registered or incorporated in their home country and must have operated for at least two years prior to participating in the CBTF. Participants may receive as much as 100 per cent financing, or up to $800 000, of total training costs. Persons will have a maximum of two years to complete the CBTF.

Relocation Of The Administrative Building & Staff Of Fire Service

The Administration, Registry and Accounts sections of the Barbados Fire Service are being relocated from their Probyn Street Office, to the 5th Floor, General Post Office Building, Cheapside, Bridgetown. The move will take effect from Tuesday, April 15.

To facilitate this move, the Registry and Accounts sections will be closed from Friday, April 11.??However, business hours will remain the same, i.e. from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m., Mondays to Fridays.

The telephone number for the Registry is 427-2536, and that for the Accounts section is 427-2527. Emergencies must still be reported by calling 311.??Any inconvenience is regretted.

April Fourth A Day Of Celebrations At SJPP

It will be a day of celebrations this Friday, April 4, when the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) recognises the achievements of its students and staff.

The SJPP has a lot to celebrate this year having performed well in a number of areas.

Two students in the agricultural division ??? Zikki Corbin and Ryan Jordan – came in for high praise for their explanation and demonstration of an aquaponics display at Agrofest 2014 and World Skills Barbados.

The Under 19 football team, under the professional guidance of Coach Derek Hurley, won the championship last month, while Samantha Yearwood, a student from the Garment-Making programme, came first in the World Skills Barbados competition hosted at the SJPP.

The institution also won the top prize for the Junior Duelling Chef Challenge ??? Agrofest 2014. Janee Denny and Kemar Husbands – two catering students, prepared for the course by Home Economics and Catering instructor, Winifred Banfield ??? were winners of that competition.

Additionally, over 20 students will be rewarded for their high achievement having attained a grade point average of above 3.7. The polytechnic will hold the Awards Ceremony in the Auditorium at Wildey, St. Michael, at 9:30 a.m.

Chairman of the Board of Management, Desmond Browne will deliver remarks, while Deputy Principal, Henderson Cadogan will welcome the staff and student body.??Principal, Hector Belle will also address the event.
