Library Service Closed April 19

Members of the public are advised that all sections of the National Library Service will be closed next Saturday, April 19.

All service points will reopen on Tuesday, April 22. The National Library Service has apologised for any inconvenience caused.

FCCA Essay Competition 2014

Students in the primary and secondary schools will get an opportunity to impress the judges with their well-researched thoughts on the importance of cruise ships coming to Barbados.

The Florida Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) is inviting contestants in the age categories of 12 and under and 13 to 16, to write an essay in 500 words and in Standard English on the topic: Why is it important that cruise ships come to my destination (Barbados)?

To be eligible, contestants in the junior and senior divisions must not have celebrated their 13th and 17th birthdays by September 26, 2014.??Each entry must be accompanied by an entry form and include the following: country; names and addresses of the students; their date of birth; telephone number; the name and address of their school; the name of the school principal; and the school???s telephone number.

The entries may be submitted in the entrant???s handwriting or typed double spaced in Times New Roman font, size 12.??The participating schools must submit their original entries, one from each age category, to the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, Two Mile Hill, St. Michael, no later than Friday, June, 20.

The first, second and third prize winners and their schools will receive a cash prize of US $3,000, $1,500 and $1,000 respectively.??First place regional winners in the Children???s Essay Competition will be invited to accept their prizes at the FCCA Caribbean Cruise Conference in St. Maarten slated for October 6-10.

FCCA Environmental Poster Competition 2014

Primary and secondary schools students are being invited to depict various aspects of protecting the environment and promoting environmental awareness by utilising art to sketch their ideas.

The Florida Cruise Association (FCCA) is inviting persons in the age categories of 12 and under and 13 to 16, to submit a poster in Standard English that shows three ways in which his/her destination may make a difference in preserving the environment.

However, in order to enter, students in the junior and senior divisions must not have celebrated their 13th and 17th birthdays by June 1.??The poster must contain a summary description along with the title of each poster. Posters should be 22 x 28 in size on Bristol board and contestants may use colour, black and white or collage, in whatever medium of their choice, such as paint or water colours.

Each entry must include the following: country; names and address of students; their date of birth; telephone number; name and address of their school; the name of the principal and the school???s telephone number.??The entries will be judged on their creativity, relevance to the theme, content and quality of presentation (layout/design).

First place regional winners in the Children???s Environmental Poster Competition from each category, along with his/her classmates, will attend an exclusive event in their respective destinations.
