SUMMER CRAFTS PARTICIPANTS TO GRADUATE
After four weeks of intense training in three craft disciplines, 23 participants will graduate from the Craft Development Unit of the Barbados Investment and Development Corporation???s (BIDC) Summer Crafts in Pelican 2013 programme tomorrow, Wednesday, August 14, at 5:30 p.m., at the BIDC???s Small Business Centre, Fontabelle, St. Michael.
Aimed at helping persons to sharpen their skills in the areas of Basketry, Fish Net Making and Woodwork, participants were also taught about a range of craft products including shoe racks, wooden frames for mirrors, mortars and pestles, pandanus fans, cabbage-bark baskets and fish nets.
During the closing ceremony, presentation of certificates will be made to the graduands. In addition their work will be exhibited in the Foyer of the Small Business Centre from August 14 to 23 between 8:00 a.m., and 4:00 p.m.
ST. PETER PARISH COMMITTEE LAUNCHES EVENTS
With the season of independence around the corner, the St. Peter Parish Independence Committee has announced that it will be hosting health-focused activities for the benefit of the public.
The first event will be a free breakfast walk on Saturday, August 24, at 5:30 a.m., and it will begin at the Speightstown Resource Centre, Orange Street, St. Peter. Participants will then proceed to Mile and a Quarter, turn left towards Maynards, then pass Port St. Charles Marina and end at the Speightstown esplanade, where breakfast will be served.
Then, on Sunday, September 1, the Committee will hit the road again with a 5K Walk/Run, beginning at 4:30 p.m. at the Speightstown esplanade. There will be a registration fee for both the walk/run, and a zumba session which will follow. Prizes will be awarded for first place, largest group and oldest male and female entrants.

LANDSHIP CELEBRATES 150TH ANNVERSARY
The Barbados Landship will celebrate its 150th anniversary by offering some of the best in Bajan culture with Ship Ahoy! and Landship Splash.
Reminiscent of old time street fairs, Ship Ahoy! will be held on Friday, September 27, from 11:00 a.m. at Licorish Village, My Lord???s Hill, St. Michael; while Landship Splash, which combines a parade, a concert and fair, will be held at Queen???s Park, The City on Saturday, October 26, from 11:00 a.m.
Vendors who are interested in participating in the anniversary activities have been invited to attend a meeting on Tuesday, August 27, at 6:30 p.m., at the Dock, Licorish Village, My Lord???s Hill, St. Michael; while interested performers and cultural practitioners have been invited to attend a meeting on Wednesday, August 28, at 6:30 p.m. at the same location.

CALLS FOR RESEARCH PAPERS FROM PROFESSIONALS
Private and public sector service professionals in Barbados have been called on to submit research papers for the upcoming Seventh Economic and Social Lecture-Seminar series.
It will be hosted by the Research and Planning Unit of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs and the theme of this year???s workshop is Private Sector Led Growth and Development in Barbados 2013-2020.
Papers pertinent to the theme of the discussions, research topics of a personal choice and those of a policy nature, where relevant, may be submitted to the Research and Planning Unit, Economic Affairs Division, the Ministry of Finance and Economic Affairs, Warrens Office Complex, St. Michael, by Friday, September 20. This year???s seminar will be held on Monday, September 30, and its purpose is to create an opportunity for strategic dialogue that brings out private sector-led investment issues in relation to growth and development in Barbados. The all-day meeting is expected to give the participants a better understanding of government, private sector and civil society???s perspectives on how the private sector can lead growth over the eight-year Medium-Term Growth and Development Strategy 2013-2020.
UDC MARKET PLACE ON SWING BRIDGE THIS THURSDAY
Some of this island???s small business entrepreneurs will showcase their products and services this Thursday, August 15, when the historic Chamberlain Bridge in Bridgetown is transformed into the Urban Development Commission???s (UDC) Market Place.
This initiative, which will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., is aimed at creating a developmental platform for entrepreneurs. In addition to making purchases, members of the public will receive health checks and vital information will be shared.
The UDC is currently celebrating its anniversary under the theme, Urban Progress, Urban Culture, Urban Life – 16 Years of Urban Development.
BDF???S ANNIVERSARY PARADE CANCELLED
The Barbados Defence Force (BDF) has advised all invited guests and the public that its 34th Anniversary Parade, which was scheduled for Saturday, August 24, at the Garrison Savannah, has been cancelled.
The BDF has apologised for any inconvenience the cancellation may cause.
