DISPUTE RESOLUTION & CONFLICT MEDIATION APPRECIATION CEREMONY

Twenty-two students who completed a Dispute Resolution and Conflict Mediation Programme will receive awards on Saturday, August 10, during an Appreciation Ceremony at Courtyard By Marriott, Hastings, Christ Church, beginning at 10:00 a.m.

Acting Chief Magistrate, Barbara Cooke-Alleyne, will deliver the feature address during the ceremony, while Director of the National Task Force on Crime Prevention (NTFCP), Cheryl Willoughby, will deliver the opening and welcome remarks.

Acting Research Officer at the NTFCP, Sasha Clarke, explained that the programme was hosted by the NTFCP and was a pro-active initiative adopted by nine primary schools across the island to address incidents of violence, delinquency and indiscipline among the youth. It is also designed to prevent and reduce the occurrence of adult criminality, by equipping individuals with dispute resolution and conflict mediation skills.

Ms. Clarke said the programme adopted a two-pronged approach for the five-week student workshop referred to as Teen Spot and targeted students between the ages of 12 and 14 years. It also has another component ??? Parent Forum ??? a two-day intensive parent workshop for parents and guardians of the Teen Spot participants.

STUDENTS FROM DUKE UNIVERSITY TO BE IN POLYCLINICS

Through the efforts of the Barbados Community College, 10 students from the Duke University School of Nursing, which is located in Durham, North Carolina, will have the opportunity to get first-hand knowledge about this island???s health care system.??

The students, who will be accompanied by a Clinical Instructor, will be attached to a number of polyclinics across the island from Tuesday, August 13, until Friday, August 23. Prior to the internships, there will be an orientation session on Monday, August 12, followed by a tour of the island for the visitors.??
