Town Hall Meeting To Discuss CEDAW, Domestic Violence
Members of the public will have another opportunity to express their concerns and air their views on domestic violence and other issues affecting women, when the Bureau of Gender Affairs hosts a Town Hall Meeting next month.
The meeting, which will be held Thursday, March 6, at the Queen???s Park Steel Shed, Constitution Road, at 7:30 p.m., will also see the presentation of the findings of a draft report which addresses the Convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
The CEDAW, which was adopted in 1979 by the United Nations General Assembly, is considered an international bill of rights for women. It defines what constitutes discrimination against women and serves as a call to action for its signatory nations, which includes Barbados.
Representatives from trade unions, school-based organisations, such as PTAs, and women???s leagues of political parties who would have special interest in themes to be discussed are especially urged to attend.
These topics include wages and how they are affected by gender; child abuse among girls; women???s roles in political decision making; and intimate partner violence.
Spay Week Begins February 24
Dog owners will benefit from a reduced cost initiative offered by the Animal Control Centre, when Spay Week begins next Monday, February 24.
Coordinated by the Centre, the Ministry of Health and the Veterinary Association, the Week will see spaying and neutering offered for the fee of $120.00 Owners are advised that a screening protocol will be in effect to ensure that only genuine cases will benefit.
Spaying of female dogs and neutering of male dogs helps prevent the birth of unwanted animals, thereby controlling dog overpopulation on the island and reducing the number of dogs that are euthanized or involved in car accidents. Spayed animals also tend to be less aggressive and less inclined to stray, which would also benefit the community at large.

???University In Community??? Lecture On Manufacturing In Barbados
Assessing Barbadian Manufacturing: Pride and Industry? is the title of the next lecture in the University in the Community Lunchtime Lecture Series.
It will be delivered by Executive Director of the Barbados Manufacturers??? Association, Bobbi McKay on Thursday, February 27, at the Grande Salle, Central Bank of Barbados, starting at noon.
The lecture series is organised by the University of the West Indies??? Open Campus in collaboration with the Central Bank.??Members of the public are invited to attend the lecture.
Constituency Council Meetings Continue
The series of Town Hall meetings which are being hosted by the Constituency Councils will continue tomorrow, Wednesday, February 19, when the St. Michael East Council meets at the Grantley Prescod Primary School, The Pine, at 6:30 p.m.
Residents of that constituency are encouraged to attend and participate in the discussion which will address various issues pertaining to their communities. Members of the Council will also report on the projects and programmes which have been, and will be, established.
The Christ Church West Central Constituency Council will then hold its meeting this Saturday, February 22, at the Aberdeen Jones Centre, Gall Hill, beginning at 4:30 p.m., while the meeting for residents of St. Peter will take place on Sunday, February 23, at the Speightstown Community Centre, at 5:00 p.m.
The St. George North???s meeting at the Valley Resource Centre, will conclude the series for this month, on Tuesday, February 25, beginning at 7:30 p.m.
