SJPP TO OFFER NEW COURSE FOR CONSTRUCTION OF HOUSES

A new course that will seek to enhance community resilience to disasters by promoting safer building standards in the Caribbean starts next month at the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP).

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), through the Comprehensive Disaster Management Harmonised Implementation Programme (CDM HIP) Phase I, has made support available to its participating states for training in safer building at the national level.

As a result, countries have been urged to deliver training in the Regional Code of Practice for the Construction of Houses, a safer building course developed by CDEMA in collaboration with the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality and the Department of Emergency Management (DEM).
The SJPP, as the principal training institution for the building trades in Barbados, will facilitate the programme.

The 40-hour course starts on Tuesday, February 11, with an official opening in the Gazebo Classroom Village, SJPP, Wildey, St. Michael, at 4:45 p.m. SJPP???s Principal, Hector Belle and Executive Director of CDEMA, Ronald Jackson, will address the event.

CONSTRUCTION WORKERS URGED TO REGISTER FOR NEW SJPP COURSE

Workers involved in the construction industry are being urged to apply for the new course being offered by the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic (SJPP) which aims to equip them with the skills to construct safer dwellings with a higher resilience to disasters.

The course, which starts on Tuesday, February 11, still has room for contractors, carpenters, foremen, masons, plumbers, roofers, engineers, architects and other building professionals.

Entitled: Regional Code of Practice for the Construction of Houses, the 40-hour programme will be held on Tuesdays from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m.

Successful participants will be awarded the SJPP???s Unit Certificate worth two credits.

Registration closes on Tuesday, February 4.
