APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR THE AGRICULTURAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION COMPETITION

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food, Fisheries and Water Resource Management is encouraging all Barbadians to let their ideas become a reality by participating in its inaugural Agricultural Science and Technology Innovation Competition.

The competition, which commenced on Tuesday, July 16 and will conclude on Wednesday, March 12, 2014, will see the first-place winner awarded a prize of $60,000. Second and third place winners will be awarded $20,000 and $10,000, respectively.

Entrants must be citizens or permanent residents of Barbados. It is opened to individuals or groups with ideas in any aspect of agriculture and fisheries. The categories are: fisheries, mechanisation, crops, agro-tourism, marketing, agro-processing, information technology, application, security, livestock, pharmaceutical, renewable energy, and low cost sustainable green technologies.

The competition is being held in three phases. During the first phase, participants will be required to submit a two page summary, along with an application form. The deadline for submissions is Friday, October 11.

In the second phase, five proposals will be short listed, and technical assistance will be provided to develop the proposals and business plans. The business plan will address the key elements, such as marketing, feasibility and financial projections. This phase will begin on Friday, November 1, and conclude on Monday, January 27, 2014.

During the final phase, the five finalists will be expected to present their proposals to a selection panel, and must justify or defend the idea. Presentations will be made on Wednesday, February 19, and Thursday, February 20, 2014.

WOODEN PALLETS NEEDED FOR MINISTRY OF AGRICULTURE

The public is advised that the Entomology Section of the Ministry of Agriculture is again accepting wooden pallets.

They will be used for the burning of the Giant African Snail.

The Ministry thanks the public for its cooperation in this venture.

ROAD CLOSURE IN CHURCH VILLAGE

In order to complete the surface drainage works in the Church Village area, Church Street, The City, will continue to be closed until Thursday, August 1, to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The Barbados Tourism Investment Inc. (BTI) has advised that during this period, access to the Central Bank of Barbados and the Frank Collymore Hall will be from Garnet Street via Crumpton Street.

Motorists and pedestrians are therefore asked to exercise extreme caution and comply with all signage and construction personnel, as they travel along the area.

The BTI has apologised for any inconvenience which may be caused, and thanked the public for its cooperation.

PERSONS NEEDED TO SIT ON CONSTITUENCY COUNCILS

Nominations are open for innovative and dedicated persons to sit on a number of Constituency Councils. Those councils requiring new members are St. Michael North West, St. Michael North, St. George South, St. Philip South, Christ Church South, and St. James North.

Persons may be nominated by a community-based organisation, an individual, or may nominate themselves.

Nomination forms may be obtained from, and returned to, the Ministry of Social Care, Constituency Empowerment and Community Development, Fourth Floor, Warrens Office Complex, St. Michael, or may be downloaded from the website www.councils.gov.bb

All nominations must be submitted by Friday, August 9.
