BADMC???S May Southern Farmers??? Market

The Barbados Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation is inviting everyone to support local farmers, at its May Southern Farmers??? Market.

It will take place at the Fairy Valley Plantation House, Next to the DHL Building, Christ Church, on Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. each day.

Patrons will have the opportunity to purchase fresh meats such as Black belly lamb, local beef, pork and chicken. There will also be turkey wings, minced meat, lamb and beef burgers and sausages on sale.

There will be great bargains on local fresh vegetables, herbs and fruit. Cassava, sweet potato and breadfruit flours will also be on sale, along with grated and ready to cook cassava chunks. Fresh milk, eggs, jams and jewelry, among other items will be available for purchase.

Patrons will have an opportunity to sample new products and blood pressure, blood sugar and BMI tests will be performed free of charge by members of the Knights Advantage Club.

All farmers and vendors who are interested in participating in the market are asked to contact Ian Eastman, at 428-0250, by Wednesday, May 28, to book a space.

Divers And Fishermen Urged To Register For Lionfish Derby

Divers and fishermen are being urged to register for the upcoming lionfish derby no later than, Thursday, May 15.

Those interested in participating are asked to contact the Coastal Zone Management Unit, at 622-1610, or the Barbados Lionfish hotline at 824-8361 to express their interest and to register. Alternatively, they may also express an interest by visiting the Lionfish Barbados Facebook page.

In addition, all those participating in the lionfish derby are also being invited to attend a mandatory Captain???s Meeting at the Fisheries Division, Princess Alice Highway, Bridgetown, on Thursday, May 15, beginning at 7:00 p.m. where they may also sign-up. This meeting is important as participants will be given the rules and regulations involved in their participation for the derby.

Prizes up for grabs will include the Biggest Fish caught, the Smallest Fish caught and the Most Fish caught. Prizes include a $500 cash prize to a pole spear, trips on the Jolly Roger, an open water boat scuba dive from Hightide Watersports, Coral Reef Club, St. James, and an opportunity to learn to dive with one of the dive companies.

The lionfish derby comes off on Saturday, May 24, at the Harbour Lights, Carlisle Bay, Bay Street, St. Michael. Divers and fishermen participating are expected to start their hunt from sunrise and return to the shore just before noon when the fish will be weighed. The cook-off will begin at 1:00 p.m. The event is expected to climax at sunset.
