St. Lawrence Primary To Hold Conference On Dyslexia & ADHD

Parents of students attending the St. Lawrence Primary School will have the opportunity to better understand dyslexia and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD) on Monday, May 26.

This is when the Caribbean Dyslexia Centre and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder Centre (ARC) hold a mini conference for teachers and parents, at the school from 4:00 p.m.??

The conference is aimed at assisting parents to identify and deal with the fact that their children may have ADHD and/or Dyslexia.

Under the theme: Is it ADHD or Dyslexia or both?, Director of The ARC, Al Layne and Director of the Caribbean Dyslexia Centre, Yvonne Spencer, will highlight the symptoms, signs and testing procedures for these as well as the remediation process.

Having recognised that some of its students between the ages of seven and 11 may have problems with these two learning disabilities, the school, located on St. Lawrence Main Road in Christ Church, has moved to assist parents in getting the necessary information and assistance.

Various pupils in the age groups are expected to be tested??for the two learning disabilities and will be remediated, if found to be dyslexic or suffering from ADHD.Ministry officials are also expected to be in attendance at the conference.

???Eclectic Treasures??? An Exhibition Of Secondary School Art Work

The Media Resource Department, in collaboration with STROKES for the future, will be staging an exhibition entitled Eclectic Treasures from Sunday, June 22, to Saturday, June 28.

The event takes place at the Barbados Arts Council, Pelican Craft Centre, Bridgetown, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 22, and from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday, June 23, to Friday June, 27.??On Saturday June 28, it will run from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m.??Deputy Chief Media Resource Officer, Burkley Lowen will address the opening of the exhibition.

STROKES for the future, under the guidance of Artist Allison Bohne, seeks to nurture the emerging abilities of young artists in Barbados. The event, which is now in its third year, invites secondary schools to select the best piece of artwork created by a senior student who is currently studying art and has a keen interest in art as a career. The exhibition then provides an opportunity for students to showcase their artistic skills to the general public.

Submitted artwork will be displayed among those of seasoned artists for the duration of the exhibition and will be made available for sale. The selected art must be submitted to the Arts Council by Wednesday June 11, and it must be mounted on a border of two inches or more and completely framed for hanging.
