UN International Day for Disaster Reduction 2014

Barbados will join the rest of the world in observing the United Nations International Day for Disaster Reduction (IDDR) 2014, on Monday, October 13.

Under the theme: Resilience is for Life, the Department of Emergency Management (DEM) will take part in a forum at the Vauxhall Senior Citizens??? Village, Vauxhall, Christ Church, on that day at 10:00 a.m.

Disaster Risk Management Specialist with the Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance, Clive Lorde, will also make a presentation to the staff and residents of the village.

During the forum, officials from the DEM will launch and distribute brochures entitled: Disaster Preparedness for the Elderly and People with Disabilities and Special Needs, as a part of their continued public education efforts.

The IDDR started in 1989 with the approval of the United Nations General Assembly. It is seen as a way to promote a global culture of disaster reduction, and includes disaster prevention, mitigation and preparedness.

Police Complaints Authority New Location

Members of the public are asked to note that the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) has now been relocated to the Ground Floor, Jones Building, Webster Industrial Park, Wildey, St. Michael.

The new telephone numbers for the PCA are 621-0110, 622-0220 or 622-0222, while the fax number remains 429-4057.

Seniors Art and Craft Exhibition Next Week

Senior citizens who participate in recreational activity programmes held at a number of centres across the island, will showcase their creative skills next week during an art and craft exhibition.

It is being organised by the National Assistance Board and will be held at the Grand Salle, Central Bank of Barbados, from Friday, October 17, to Sunday, October 19.??Items on display will include bead work, canvas work, floral arrangements, embroidery, jewellery, sheets and bedspreads.

The centres participating are: Grazettes Community Centre, Valley Resource Centre, North Stars, Edgecliff Wesleyan Church, Speightstown Bus Terminal, St. Elizabeth Sports Pavilion, St. Bartholomew Sports Hall, St. Matthias Church Hall, James Bryan Complex, Welches Wesleyan Holiness Church, Gall Hill Community Centre, Roy Thompson Hall, Haggatt Hall Wesleyan Holiness Church, Four Roads Seventh-day Adventist Church, White Park Road Wesleyan Holiness Church and Eden Lodge Resource Centre.

Members of the public are invited to attend the exhibition between 10:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., daily.

SPBMP Leadership Workshop for Primary School Students

Students at 27 primary schools involved in the Schools??? Positive Behaviour Management Programme (SPBMP) will next week learn more about the important skills required to perform leadership roles within their schools.

This is when the Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation holds a one-day workshop for Head Boys and Head Girls on Monday, October 13, at Almond Bay, Hastings, Christ Church, from 8:45 a.m. until 3:00 p.m.

It will be held under the theme: Acts of Continuous Kindness, and students will be taught the concepts of Leadership and Kindness, and what being an Active Bystander means with respect to bullying, injury or emergencies.

Facilitators for the sessions will include Senior Education Officer (Nursery and Primary), Joy Adamson; Education Officer and Focal Point for SPBMP, Janice Reid; SPBMP team member, Ovid Gibbs; and Family Counsellor with the Student Support Services Unit, Joanne Devonish.
